Employment of arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2016. Many individuals and businesses try to avoid litigation, which can involve lengthy delays, high costs, unwanted publicity, and ill will. Arbitration and other alternatives to litigation usually are faster, less expensive, and more conclusive, spurring demand for the services of arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators. Demand also will continue to increase for arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators as all jurisdictions now have some type of alternative dispute resolution program. Some jurisdictions have programs requiring disputants to meet with a mediator, in certain circumstances, such as when attempting to resolve child custody issues.
Job prospects. The prestige associated with serving on the bench will ensure continued competition for judge and magistrate positions. However, a growing number of candidates choose to forgo the bench and work in the private sector, where pay may be significantly higher. This movement may lessen the competition somewhat. Most job openings will arise as judges retire. However, additional openings will occur when new judgeships are authorized by law or when judges are elevated to higher judicial offices.

The top 10 percent earned more than $145,600, while the bottom 10 percent earned less than $29,540. Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of judges, magistrate judges, and magistrates in May 2006 were $117,760 in State government and $74,630 in local government. Inevitably from time to time the protection of individual rights requires unpopular decisions that invoke adverse reaction from the public, its legislative representatives, or the executive branch. The FJA, standing independent of all others, with one goal in mind-the independence of the judiciary that protects the freedom of us all-can speak in one voice to protect that independence, to explain its importance to a free society, and to explain the necessity of such decisions.
To further independence, the Association promotes adequate salaries and support for the performance of judicial functions, thereby attracting qualified men and women to the bench. It expresses the collective view of Article III judges to the public and the other branches of government whenever defense of judicial independence is threatened or separation of powers is compromised.
The current salary of the federal judiciary is not adequate. Bills have been introduced in the Senate and the House to deal with this issue. A United States Magistrate Judge is a federal trial judge appointed to serve in a United States district court for a term of eight years. He or she is appointed by the life-tenured federal judges of a district court, District Judges, who supervise the activities of the Magistrate Judges by assigning civil cases for jury or non-jury trial upon consent of the parties and for pre-trial matters. Similarly criminal cases are assigned to Magistrate Judges on the consent of the parties, except for the trial of felony cases.

In 1990, Congress enacted legislation that directs each district court to devise and adopt a civil expense and delay reduction plan. One goal established under the legislation is for each civil case to be scheduled for trial within 18 months of filing the complaint.
Litigants should keep in mind that judges have many duties in addition to deciding cases. The average district court judge has more than 400 newly filed cases to contend with each year. In addition to trials, judges conduct sentencings, pretrial conferences, settlement conferences, motions hearings, write orders and opinions, and consider other court matters both in the courtroom and in their chambers.
There are numerous reasons for delay, many of which are outside of a court's control. Attorneys and/or litigants may be responsible. Cases may be delayed because settlement negotiations are in progress. Some courts also experience shortages in judges or available courtrooms.

Ex. Michael Chionopoulos judge: Isolation keeps a victim trapped. Frequently, a batterer isolates the victim from the family socially, emotionally and geographically. The victim is frequently forbidden to see trusted friends and family, and is denied the opportunity to go to school or work outside the home. There is little or no access to or control over finances. in the midst of this terrible isolation, the abuser employs "brainwashing" tactics, and with no input to the contrary from anyone outside the relationship, there will be no way for the victim to test reality.
The abuser's "protector" behavior further isolates the victim from those persons and things that are important to his or her well-being. After a long period of isolation the victim may feel emotionally overwhelmed, terrified and confused. If the victim should enter into a new relationship, he or she tends to have an overwhelming fear of the abuser's threats of harm. The victim will also feel tremendous guilt over having put another person into danger. At the same time, the victim may question and struggle with issues of trust, not knowing if the new relationship is real or simply a repetition of the patterns previously established with the abuser.
Recognizing the Violence - Michael Chionopoulos. A victim of abuse often has confused thoughts and feelings. As surprising as it may seem, many are not really sure if they are being abused. They know that something is very wrong, but just can't seem to identify it properly. Denial, rationalization and minimization are methods of coping day-to-day with the reality and severity of the abuse. The first step toward ending a violent relationship is to identify it as such. For many victims, identifying oneself as a victim of battering is an extremely difficult step. Once appointed, state judges in the United States usually serve terms for a fixed period of years, although in some states (e.g., Massachusetts) the appointment is for life, often subject to mandatory retirement at some fixed age. Lapses of judicial ethics include matters such as taking bribes, open defiance of a binding court order, ruling upon a case in which the judge has a personal interest, failure to account for court funds, failure to conduct court proceedings with a suitably judicial demeanor, harassment of judicial employees or a judge's conviction of a serious offense unrelated to judicial service. Disability complaints often involve allegations that a judge is beginning to show symptoms of alcoholism, dementia or an inability to stay awake.
